It never occurred to me while growing up. There were too many other insecurities I was focused on. Besides, I come from great stock, but not one of them is over 5’6. A few are way under 5 feet. It didn’t stop me, and going to the dressmaker, as my mom called it, was normal in our house.
I’m 5’3”, and wouldn’t have it any other way. I get to climb up on things that most people wouldn’t think about doing, and I like my perspective.
I used to try to make up for it a little by wearing higher heels, but walking in the city (San Francisco) meant often getting my heel caught in something. Finally gave up and wore sport shoes to and from work and kept my heels at the office. Once more casual dress became acceptable, I moved to wearing wedge boots or wedge heeled shoes.
Nowadays I’m all about sport shoes and the occasional wedge boots/wedge ankle boots. But I still treasure being shorter.
I’m barely 5’2” and most of my female relatives of my generation are 5’5” to 5’8”. That’s on the taller side if you’re of southern Chinese stock. I guess it’s just bad luck when it comes to genetics since my mom is 5’5” at her full height and my dad is 5’10” at his full height. I’ve found that even the fashion world (especially the fashion world?) doesn’t really “get” us since all I hear is “why don’t you just get things tailored?” Well, you can’t alter a lot of things and it’s not just about leg length! I’m pretty proportioned so I’m short all over! There was a huge petite blogging community back in the late naughts but everyone (save for Jean Wang who is now more of a general influencer) kind of disappeared. I guess we all just got married, became parents and moved on. I too, would love to see more petite models now that we’re supposed to be size diverse. It seems that we’re still only focusing on clothing size. For me, I really don’t care if a model is a 0 or 18 or whatever. I want to see a short gal!
I am dinky too and have always loved it. Especially when in front over tall men… we somehow click. Our bodies are miniature but our minds know no limit 😉❤️ love you Bobbi
Tall girl chiming in! I know how it all feels from the other side of the spectrum though. Just goes to show that we’re all the same but different 😘
Fellow member of the 5 feet club! Always dreamed of opening a “short and small” store that specializes in petite clothing!
