I love shoes. I’ve always loved shoes. My mother tells the story of how, when she bought me a new pair, I insisted on wearing them immediately. Once, after a shoe shopping trip, she took me out to lunch, and I placed the brand-new shoes on the table so they wouldn’t get scuffed. My grandmother told me never to put shoes on a table—it’s bad luck. I’ve remembered that ever since.
If you look in my closet, you’ll find a collection of high-heeled sandals, embellished and elegant, alongside pointed-toe shoes I wore for years at events and during photoshoots. Back then, I always carried a second pair—flats or sneakers—because the shoes I wore never lasted more than a couple of hours. Like most women my age, those days are behind me. Now I prioritize comfort. At five feet tall, I mostly wear sneakers or loafers unless it’s a cocktail party or black-tie event. When I do dress up, I usually choose platforms over small heels. Flat platforms in particular are my favorite. They’re comfortable, they give height, and they still look elevated.
I wore a pair of red Prada platform pumps to the Met Gala once. They made the outfit, but my feet were numb for days. I remember taking them off while leaving the venue and wishing someone had captured that moment.
Today, my Robert Clergieri black platform sandals are my go-to. They’re cushioned and slightly angled, which makes them feel more supportive and polished than flat platforms. They’ve become a staple. Then there are my other Prada platforms—one pair is slightly stretched out but still incredibly comfortable. I also have them in silver with a green and white striped sole. I won’t get rid of either.
Finding a pair of Hermes Cypress platforms was a challenge, but worth it. I now somehow own them in navy suede and a dove gray as well. I’m not sure how that happened, but I’m not mad about it.
At home, I wear platform slippers by UGG. They’re lined in faux fur, warm enough to wear without socks in winter, and have just enough height to feel structured.
I still have an older pair of Chanel sneakers that I bought years ago. They’re narrow and not the most comfortable, but the sole has a small logo detail I like. I should probably try to wear them in more. On the other hand, my New Balance 574s—black and gray—are some of the most versatile shoes I own. They’re great for travel, workouts, and casual days when I still want to look pulled together.
I also hold onto a discontinued style from a company called Greats. They were made in multiple colors, and I stocked up when I could. I haven’t seen anything like them since.
When I want to look a little more polished, I rotate between my Prada and Gucci loafers. Both brands are reliable, comfortable, and easy to pair with almost anything.
Last but not least, I love my rubber Steve Madden platforms. They were $36, and I consider them the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned. All rubber, inside and out, and I still have a backup pair in the box. I bought them in white, too. If anyone at Steve Madden ever reads this—please bring them back. Call them the Bobbi. They’ll sell. I’m sure of it.
Red patent leather shoes I got when I was seven years old.... I still remember then 60 years later. Shoes are jewelry for your feet !! So loved reading your story.
Yay! I have been waiting for this post 🙌🏼 I can't wait to see Steve Madden release the Bobbi! I am also putting this out into the universe ✨
