I wanted to tell you guys a little bit about what it was like recording my new memoir, Still Bobbi.
I wrote it. Now I have to say it…all of it. Honestly, I thought writing the book was the hard part. Then I stepped into the recording booth. Eight hours a day, headphones on, reading my own words out loud.
At some point I started thinking, “Why did I do this again?” You learn a lot about yourself after talking for three days straight. Me? I clear my throat a lot.
I had four days booked on my calendar, and on day one, I woke up with a really bad sinus infection and was put on antibiotics. That’s how I started the recording process.
I drove to Sound on Sound Studios in Montclair around 9:15 AM, crossing my fingers. The studio was actually super cool. They've been around since 1986 and recently relocated in Montclair.
I had no idea how many iconic artists have recorded there: Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, and Nirvana, just to name a few. The studio has also hosted legends like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Britney Spears, and so many others.
Then we started recording. The first few chapters were a little hard. I had herbal tea, water, three different kinds of cough drops, my antibiotics, you name it. I just knew I had to power through.
I even tried honey. I was hoarse, had a bit of a cough, but somehow, I pulled it off.
By day two and three, I felt like a total pro. Lucky for me, I had an incredible production team. They knew exactly when to stop me, when to have me re-record something, or when to say, “Let’s try that with a little more energy.” I’m kind of known for having a bit of a monotone voice, but the whole experience was cathartic and honestly, pretty amazing.
I also discovered a great hack: drop a cough drop into hot water and let it melt, then sip it while you read. It was a game-changer for my throat. And thankfully, the sinus infection was finally clearing up.
By the end of the final day, I was wiped. All the vocal rest definitely helped… I’m so glad I did it, and even more glad it’s over. I give a lot of credit to people who do this for a living.
I can’t wait for you to hear the book, especially for those of you who are more listeners than readers. As always, preorder Still Bobbi!
