This is my second season working with Lisa, who is a trainer at Equinox in the Hamptons. I booked one session with her at the beginning of last summer and immediately got hooked. While the gym is mostly filled with very muscular men, Lisa was the sole female there, not much taller than me, but really strong, positive, and actually quite tough. Not too tough, but tough enough that I’d feel sore the next day. After just two sessions, I was already coming back for more, and by the end of the summer, sometimes I could even fit in a third session.

What happened at the end of last summer was pretty awesome: when I stepped on the machine that measures body fat and muscle, I actually lost maybe a pound on the scale, but gained almost three pounds of muscle (meaning I lost fat). I try not to pay too much attention to the number on the scale, but I focus on how my clothes fit and if I feel comfortable. That usually means I’m working out regularly, not restricting myself, and not overindulging, It’s a happy medium that works for me.

I just started my second season working with Lisa, and I told her this is my “summer of glow-up.” I want to be in fighting shape for my book tour this fall, feeling strong for travel, mobile and limber, and able to throw on my clothes without worrying about how they fit. Muscle just looks better.

This year, I’m also experimenting with adding a day a week with another trainer named Issac Boot—more on him soon. He’s a little crazy, but I kinda like it.

Q: What did you eat for breakfast today?

A: Stars & Honey Collagen Protein bar and some blueberries.

Q: What’s the most efficient way to stay toned and healthy without burning out?

A: I find the most efficient way way to stay healthy, without burning out, is to cross train. Mix up your gym routine by learning new skills or adding classes. You can try swimming or cardio dance classes to freshen up your work outs, and/ or find a training partner.

This will add some fun to your routine! The bonus is it will also create more results because you are challenging your body with new exercises.

Q: How often do you need to work out for it to really be effective?

A: You need to work out a minimum of 2 days to really see results. 3 to 4 would be ideal. Your body needs consistency in order to adapt.
