Eye makeup can be really simple, but many people tend to overcomplicate it by trying to mimic what they've seen on TikTok or read on a blog. I'm going to break it down in a clear and straightforward way.
Step 1: Base Layer
Start by applying a light shade over the entire eyelid. This step has multiple benefits: it neutralizes discoloration, reduces redness, lightens dark lids, and absorbs any oil on the eyelid.
Step 2: Medium Shade
Next, choose a medium shade of eyeshadow, ideally a neutral color that complements your skin tone. Use a small fluffy brush, dip it into the powder eyeshadow, and tap off the excess to prevent fallout on your face, which would require extra cleanup.
Look straight into the mirror and check your work. If you have hooded eyelids like mine, you may need to apply a bit more of the medium shade, or even layer a darker shade on top to add dimension.
Step 3: Add Definition With Liner
For those with smaller or deep-set eyes, I highly recommend applying eyeliner close to your upper lashes and a softer line underneath. Start with a well-sharpened brown pencil. You can also use a darker shadow with a brush (dry or damp) or a gel liner. While brown is a good starting point, navy, black, deep hunter green, or violet can also work.
Step 4: Make The Eyes Pop With Mascara
Before adding more eyeshadow, apply a couple of coats of the blackest mascara you have. Allow each coat to dry for a few seconds before applying the next. Here, you can go a bit heavy-handed to create volume, but avoid clumping.
Step 5: Groom Brows For A Lift
Move on to your eyebrows. Filling in your brows adds lift to the eyes and gives a stronger appearance. Finding your arch is important, as it helps lift the eye, which many of us need as we age. You can fill in the brows with a shadow and a slanted hard brush in the color of your eyebrow hair, or you could use an eyebrow pencil or a brow wand if you have enough hair.
In simple terms: Start with a light shadow, add a medium shadow, and then apply the darkest shadow or liner on top of the medium shade to create depth. That’s pretty much it. I'll be back with tips for creating a smoky eye and correction techniques for different eye shapes, but I wanted to start with the basics. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
